The 4CS of diamonds
Want to make a diamond purchase, but do not know how to check diamond’s quality? We decided to help you out and explain the 4Cs of Diamonds, that are the globally accepted standards for assessing the quality of a diamond - cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. But first we want to mention, that every diamond is unique and has specific qualities that establish its value.
1) The most important C is cut because it has the most impact on diamond’s sparkle and brilliance. Cut refers not only to the shape of a diamond, but more importantly to its proportions, symmetry and polish.
2) The second most important C is color, actually the lack of color. In nature, most white diamonds have a slight tint of yellow. That is why the rule is very simple: the less color, the higher is the grade.
3) Carat weight is a diamond weight, and not a size. Two diamonds of equal weight can have very unequal value depending upon the cut, color and clarity of each.
4) Least important C is clarity, because even if a diamond has any imperfections, they are microscopic. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth, under extreme heat and pressure, that is why all diamonds have "birthmarks"- small imperfections inside the diamond (called inclusions), or on its surface (called blemishes). Clarity refers to the degree to which these imperfections are present.
At Luvente we focus on the quality and beauty of each diamond to make sure that our pieces will please you for a long time.
