JEWELRY MYTHS WE ARE READY TO DESTROY

JEWELRY MYTHS WE ARE READY TO DESTROY

There are so many myths and rules about wearing or buying jewelry that sometimes it is hard to tell what is true and what is not. Today we decided to break those rules and destroy the myths to make your next jewelry purchase easier. So here are the most common misconceptions about jewelry.

JEWELRY MYTH 1: Nothing can destroy a diamond.

Yes, diamonds place at the top on the Mohs Hardness Scale at a 10, but it does not mean they are indestructible. They last a long time because of their hardness, but they can be cracked by hitting them directly or exposing them to extreme temperatures. A fun fact to remember rubies and sapphires, which rank lower on the Mohs Scale, have fewer chances of chipping compared to diamonds.

JEWELRY MYTH 2: If you are wearing a yellow gold watch, you can only wear yellow gold jewelry.

Once and forever forget the archaic rule of wearing only jewelry of one color in your look. You can mix all 3 colors at a time: white, yellow, and rose, and it looks very trendy, fresh, and stylish. We have a blog post about how to mix different metals. Make sure to check it out if you still had not.

JEWELRY MYTH 3: The bigger the diamond, the higher the value

The value of a diamond is never judged by its size or carat weight. We all remember about the 4Cs of a diamond, right? Carat, clarity, color and cut. So, every single diamond is unique and has its own unique combination of 4Cs, each equally determining its value. As a result, a smaller sized diamond can be more valuable than a bigger one, only because its other 3 characteristics are better.

JEWERY MYTH 4: Sapphires can be only blue.

That is the biggest misconception, as sapphires besides having a blue color can either be yellow, orange, pink, green or even white. For example, the iron content in sapphires turns them yellow, and the chromium content makes them pink.

JEWELRY MYTH  5: Never wear a necklace over a turtleneck.

This rule is almost as archaic as the one about not mixing metals in your look. Of course, if you are wearing a colorful sweater with different bold prints, necklace is inappropriate here. But if you are styling a simple flat turtleneck, then long necklace will add some character and shine to the whole outfit.

JEWELRY MYTH 6: Gold comes in different colors.

All of us know that jewelry can be made in rose, white, and yellow gold. That is why many believe that gold is found in a variety of colors, just like gemstones. However, it is not true. Gold is found in just one color: yellow. All other varieties come to be when other additional metals are mixed with the gold. Even yellow gold used in jewelry is mixed with other metals, because pure gold is too soft to securely hold precious gems and is not durable.
